USA Brooklyn's Black Dice Noise Art Set to Overwhelm Melbourne Festival Goers
20-Sep-2011 BLACK DICE (USA) -
Rightly renowned as one of the pre-eminent forces of the noise art movement, Brooklyn based
Black Dice has built a reputation as one of the most mercurial, abrasive and overwhelming live music experiences touring the world
today. From their origins as a post-hardcore outfit in the late 90s, through to the improvised distortion epics that marked their middle years, Black Dice have emerged in 2011 as a techno-influenced amalgam of noise atmospherics, jaggedly programmed beats and snatched, scrambled sample work.
Feared and respected in equal measure, Black Dice’s live shows are relentless audio-visual assaults, exercises in virtuosic musical cohesiveness and defiant experimentation. Virtually any and every type of venue has served as the backdrop for their shows; from basements and warehouses to art galleries and museums, from huge outdoor festivals to formal seated theaters. Each show is inspired by the context in which the music is placed, and Black Dice bring a brand new, site-specific visual show to the Forum Theatre for Melbourne Festival. Created in conjunction with long time collaborator Danny Perez
(ODDSAC) the visual component of this show is sure to rival the spectacular stage set and visuals they recently created for Animal Collective’s headline appearance at the 2011 Cochella Festival.
"An idiosyncratic mix, where attention to detail, openness to possibility, and intuitive senses of rhythm and timing all collide." - Pitchfork (USA)
Opening the night will be LA’s atypical Lucky Dragons. Listening to the two-piece is like having your preconceptions of what music should be gently disassembled and recombined by a couple of your oldest friends. Armed with a varied and ever-changing array of synthesizers, loop pedals, wind instruments and percussive elements, their music is a shimmering sonic dreamscape. A Lucky Dragons live experience, though conducted via computers, is a truly great celebration of the human spirit, not just engaging the audience in participating in the music making but whole heartedly embracing this idea in everything they do.
In addition to their Forum show, Lucky Dragons also will create a different and more intimate performance at the Toff in Town with their interactive art party/jam session along with Geoffrey O’Connor’s ethereal power ballads, synthscapes, light sculptures and mesmerizing projections on Wednesday 12 October.
