Katherine Fringe Festival
The Katherine Fringe Festival will be held on the 25-26th June 2011 to celebrate a unique community through dance arts and performance. It is organised under the umbrella of Katherine Regional Arts INC (KRA).
The Fringe Festival aims to celebrate the ancient and contemporary story of Katherine through a variety of performance, storytelling and street performance.
As a part of the festival the Northern Territories Writers Centre will be presenting a one-day literary festival. Details
KRA will create and develop a series of performances to culminate in a public community event over one weekend in various locations in the town of Katherine NT under the banner of a "Fringe Festival". The local feature of the festival "Gorrdondolmi”, The Rainbow Serpent Dreaming will be written, produced and performed by Katherine artists and this will be show cased in a feature performance on the Saturday night and mostly likely also be performed at the Darwin Festival in August.
Another feature of the festival will be the creation of a number of large wire sculptural installations by famous Territory installation artist Techy Masero and a group of indigenous story tellers and artists.
The third community created feature will be a large knitted textile rainbow serpent created by a group of community knitters/crocheting coordinated by Katherine Textile Artist Kerryn Taylor. Ms Taylor will teach people from Binjari, Rockhole and Kalano to crochet and contribute to the development of the installation. Everyone and anyone is invited to submit knitted and crochet squares for the installation.
A range of high calibre emerging and fringe artists are being sourced to perform over this weekend to provide a diverse range of alternate performance that has not been seen before in Katherine. These will include stilt walkers, living statues, dancers, acrobats, street theatre, fire and laser shows, local dancers and clowns who will perform random free acts throughout the town over the weekend.
The Saturday evening show will showcase the Gorrdondolmi -Rainbow Serpent Story - an interactive performance and puppetry show with dance and film. This will be followed by a world music band and the premier drag show ‘Drags Aloud’ that has featured at the Edinburgh Fringe and Melbourne Festivals.
The Sunday will take us into ‘Words on the Fringe’ – a one day writer’s festival hosted by the NT Writers Centre which will comprise panels, workshops, spoken word performance and a Comedy Debate.
