History?
Ten Days was the brainchild of former State Premier Jim Bacon, whose determination and enthusiasm for Tasmania, its cultural identity and its potential to host a dynamic new event with the creative exploration of island cultures at its heart, saw the inaugural event in 2001.
With Artistic Director Robyn Archer at the helm, the first Ten Days established itself as the State’s premier cultural event, presenting a programme of events which were both a critical and a commercial success.
Elizabeth Walsh took over the reins as Artistic Director in 2007 and has nurtured the growth and creative development of an event with 100,000 participants in its first year, to double that number in 2009. Over the last five festivals, Ten Days has presented both world and Australian premieres and some of the most fondly-remembered events include Ballads (CoisCeim Dance Theatre, Ireland, 2001), French Masters From The Musee Leon Direx (2005), Choral Island (2003), Dublin By Lamplight (The Corn Exchange, Ireland 2007), No2 featuring Madeleine Sami (2001), Andrew Lawrence-King’s Ancient Songs From a Small Island (2005) and Metamorphosis (Theatre Vesturport and Lyric Hammersmith 2009).
